Scuba Diving in Cenote Yaakun

A Massive Sinkhole, containing two different worlds separated by a veil of mist! This cenote's wonders can be fully appreciated if you have your Deep certification and Nitrox. The deeper you go, the more you can appreciate the vastness of this landscape.

Cenote Yaakun

Yaakun meaning "to love" in Mayan. This cenote is truly a surreal dive! Witness an underwater beach covered in shells, trees shrouded in swirling mist, the elusive blind cave fish in abundance and stunning scenic views.

This deep pit cenote is around 50m/164ft deep and its cave system descends even deeper. As the land collapsed into this sinkhole a steep slope was created, covered in huge trees. Their decomposing leaves create a mesmerizing swirling mist of Sulphur around the branches.

Yaakun differs from other cenotes, in that there is little flowing water. This means the visibility isn’t as clear, creating a surreal green landscape. As you descend, you cannot see the bottom for a few minutes. But under the sulphur cloud in the salt water the view is crystal clear, and the epically vast landscape is a stunning sight to behold.

It also has some rather unusual rock formations and stalagmites.

Diving this cenote

An advanced open water certification or higher is needed to dive this cenote. It is best as a 2 tank dive with Nitrox to truly see the vastness of this cenote. But it can also be combined with another cenote such as Eden.

We recommend that if you have 2 days to combine this with both the Deep and Nitrox courses. The deeper you go in this cenote, the more stunning it becomes.

We suggest you bring a towel and a dry set of clothes. Keep in mind that in all cenotes sunscreen, cosmetics and insect repellent are banned due to the conservation of the site.

The History

This is a fairly new cenote to the public, opened in 2025.
It contains some important scientific discoveries . An archaeological research project led by Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) is investigating some human and animal remains and a Mayan ceramic vessels. These are located deep between approximately 42 and 53 metres and are protected areas, accessible only by authorised technical divers and archaeologists and are not part of the recreational cavern route.
