Cenote Angelita
Cenote Angelita is a sinkhole that goes down to 56m/184ft! Full of fallen vegetation piling up into a pyramid of huge tree branches and debris. This rotting organic material is what produces Angelita’s distinct and famous white cloud, a smokey hydrogen sulfide gas that hangs in the water. The cloud is 3m thick and sits on a halocline, meaning visibility goes down to less than half a meter if you pass into it.
Angelita differs from other cenotes, as there is no water flowing through it. This means the visibility isn’t as clear, creating a surreal green landscape. As you descend you cannot see the bottom for a few minutes.
Dive over the alien landscape of trees and an island protruding from the cloud and then up to some rather large bulbous stalactites near the surface.
What to Expect on Your Angelita Dive Day
- 7:30 AM
Meet at the shop
We fit your gear, run through the plan for the day and load the truck.
- 8:00 AM
Drive to the cenote
We stop on the way to pick up lunch and drinks.
- 9:45 AM
Arrive at Angelita
Being the first ones in the water makes the whole experience far more magical — empty cavern, Sulphur cloud.
- 10:00 AM
Briefing and equipment setup
Full dive briefing, then we kit up together.
- 10:30 AM
First dive
- 11:30 AM
Surface interval and lunch
Time to warm up, eat and share the first impressions.
- 12:15 PM
Second dive
- 1:15 PM
Drive back to Playa
Drive home, reliving all the amazing moments of the day.
Diving this cenote
This cenote is a one tank dive and is best combined with Cenote Carwash. The depth, visibility and steep vertical descent of this cenote mean it’s not recommended as a first cenote dive.
We suggest you bring a towel and a dry set of clothes. Keep in mind that in all cenotes sunscreen, cosmetics and insect repellent are banned due to the conservation of the site.
